Report Finds Worldwide Captive Total Increased to 5,985 in 2021

For the first time in several years, the total number of captive insurance companies worldwide increased in 2021, Business Insurance magazine reports.

Last year, there were 5,985 captives worldwide, up from 5,879 in 2020, Business Insurance found. The last time the number of captive insurance companies worldwide increased was in 2015 when the captive count rose to 6,851 from 6,739 in 2014.

The biggest North American offshore captive domiciles in 2021, Business Insurance reports in its March issue, were Bermuda with 670 captive insurance companies, down from 680 in 2020; the Cayman Islands with 661 captives, up from 652 in 2020; and Barbados with 253 captives, up from 226 in 2020.

In addition, the biggest European captive domiciles in 2021 were Luxembourg with 192 captives, down from 199 in 2020; Guernsey with 192 captives, up from 188 in 2020; and the Isle of Man with 99 captives, down from 102 in 2020, according to Business Insurance.

Looking at captive managers, Business Insurance reports that Marsh Captive Solutions managed the most captives in 2021 with 1,501, followed by Aon Captive & Insurance Management with 990 captives and Artex Risk Solutions with 822 captives.
