The Captive Insurance Companies Association (CICA) has announced the three finalist teams in its 2023 "Captive Insurance Solutions for Today's Risk Management Challenges" student essay contest.

The three finalist teams are Carter Cappon and Chase Mendham of Olivet College, Olivia Faulkner and Zane Smith of Saint Mary's University, and Ting-Wei Liu and Nachapol Charamornburapong of Temple University.

The annual CICA essay contest for college risk management and insurance students is sponsored by Hylant Global Captive Solutions (Hylant GCS).

The essay contest sees two-person teams asked to describe how and why a captive insurance company could be used as a cost-effective means of alternative risk financing for new and growing risk challenges. The three finalist teams will now work with mentors from Hylant GCS to revise and enhance their essays, which will be judged to determine first, second, and third place.

The CICA student essay contest is now in its fifth year. "Each year, our finalists tell us that participating in the contest helped them see how innovative and challenging the captive insurance industry is," CICA President Dan Towle said in a statement. "Our hope is that our student participants will pursue their interest by working in the captive industry, and we are seeing that happen. In 2022, two of our essay finalists accepted job offers with captive organizations as a result of presenting their essays at the CICA conference."

"Today's students are looking at more than their first job. They're looking at future opportunities as well," Anne Marie Towle, CEO of Hylant's global captive solutions division, said in the statement. "The case studies our team developed for the CICA essay contest are based on real issues organizations are facing. They help students learn about opportunities for using captive insurance and for careers that will grow as the captive industry grows."

Essay contest winners will be announced during the Monday morning general session at CICA's International Conference March 5–7 in Rancho Mirage, California. The finalist teams will also present their case studies during an education session at the conference. Additional conference details and registration information can be found on CICA's website.
