The Captive Insurance Companies Association (CICA) recently announced the three finalist teams in its "Captive Insurance Solutions for Emerging Industries" essay contest for college risk management and insurance students, sponsored by Strategic Risk Solutions.

The three finalist teams are as follows.

  • Home Healthcare Industry—Marissa Dias and Samantha Kane, Saint Joseph's University
  • Craft Brewing Industry—Magda Olivas Carmona and Rudy Martinez, St. Mary's
  • University Cannabis Industry—Megan Moore and Natalie Kojababian, University of Southern California

For the contest, two-person student teams selected one of three emerging industry case study topics. The case studies focused on developing strategies to help fictional organizations in real-world emerging industries develop captive insurance solutions to provide financial stability and the needed coverages for current and emerging risks. Now in its second year, CICA received contest entries from a greater number of schools compared to the previous year.

Now in its second year, CICA received contest entries from a greater number of schools compared to the previous year. "It's great to see that we're reaching new universities and more students," said CICA President Dan Towle.

"Recruiting top talent to become the next generation of captive professionals takes getting captive insurance on students' radar. This type of contest not only increases awareness, it gives them first-hand experience with identifying ways to help businesses with captive insurance," he added.

Finalist teams are invited to attend the CICA 2020 International Conference in Rancho Mirage, California, March 8–10, where they will receive cash prizes and give presentations on their essays. "Our conference sessions with students are some of my favorites. When you bring together bright young minds and the industry's top leaders, you get an incredible energy that infuses us all with optimism and fresh ideas," Mr. Towle said.

This year's CICA Conference, "Building on the Best," focuses on making the captive industry stronger and better prepared to address emerging challenges and opportunities. With over 500 attendees, CICA brings together the best captive talent from around the world in a domicile-neutral setting. Together participants share best practices, explore new uses of captives, and identify ways to engage the new talent needed to continue advancing the industry.
