North Carolina Insurance Department Names New Chief Deputy

North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey has named Chuck Myers chief deputy commissioner of the North Carolina Department of Insurance, effective Oct. 1. Mr. Myers will succeed Jackie Obusek, who is retiring after 30 years with the department.

Mr. Myers most recently spent 3 1/2 years as deputy commissioner for the Louisiana Department of Insurance, where he oversaw the Office of Property and Casualty. He also chaired the Louisiana Auto Insurance Plan, restructured the Louisiana Fortified Homes Program, and led the Title Insurance Working Group at the National Association of Insurance Commissioners.

"I believe Chuck will be a real asset to our mission at NCDOI of protecting consumers and fighting fraud," Mr. Causey said. "His impressive insurance, accounting, law enforcement, and leadership experience will make the transition of losing Jackie much smoother."

Mr. Myers previously held insurance regulatory and law enforcement positions in Virginia. He managed the Real Estate Settlement Agents Investigations Section of the Virginia Bureau of Insurance and conducted an investigation that received the Virginia State Police Fraud Fighters Award. The case resulted in a conviction and the return of nearly $200,000 to consumers.

Before joining the Virginia Bureau of Insurance, Mr. Myers served as a special agent accountant for the Virginia State Police. His work included complex white-collar investigations involving elected officials, financial crimes, fraud, and forensic audits. He also directed data-driven investigative strategies, documented crime scenes as a certified crime scene analyst, and trained law enforcement personnel.

I cannot wait to get to work for the Department and the people of North Carolina," Mr. Myers said.

Mr. Myers also spent more than 20 years as a licensed insurance agent in Florida and Virginia. He remains a Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter, Certified Fraud Examiner, senior professional insurance regulator, and sworn law enforcement officer.

He earned a master of science degree in risk management and insurance from Florida State University and a bachelor of arts degree in psychology from the University of Central Florida.
