Harrison White and Bailey Sims from Butler University took first place and a $2,500 prize in the 2023–2024 Captive Insurance Companies Association (CICA) college student essay contest.

Three finalist teams competed in the "Captive Insurance Solutions for Today's Risk Management Challenges" College Student Essay Contest, sponsored by Hylant Global Captive Solutions (Hylant GCS).

Second place went to Gracie Law and Sofia Davis of Temple University with a $1,500 prize, and third place to Brian Dunn and Rose Gendy of Middle Tennessee State University with a $1,000 prize.

The teams, consisting of two individuals each, were tasked with explaining the utilization of a captive insurance company as a cost-effective alternative for financing new and growing risk challenges. Their approach involved employing case studies to illustrate key aspects, such as the establishment of a captive insurance company, policy selection, underwriting considerations, pricing, and other relevant factors. The case studies were centered on crafting strategies to assist fictional organizations in addressing real-world situations through the development of captive insurance solutions.

Mr. White and Ms. Sims proposed a cell captive solution to help a university diversify its risk coverages and better manage its risks.

"It is impressive to see the students' captive knowledge increase throughout the two rounds of submitting essays for the contest. The experience of developing a captive solution helps them see the interesting and unique coverage challenges that captives address and the opportunities to make a difference by helping an organization better manage these risks," said CICA President Dan Towle.

Anne Marie Towle, CEO global risk & captive solutions, Hylant Global Captive Solutions, said, "The captive insurance industry is dynamic and offers a wide variety of career opportunities. Once the students learn more about captive insurance, they carry that knowledge and interest with them, and we hope they will consider working in the captive industry."
