Captive Reinsurance Runoff Transactions

Steve McElhiney-SF
March 27, 2018

A new Captive Thought Leader Video featuring Steve McElhiney, president and CEO of EWI Reinsurance, titled "Reinsurance Transactions for Runoff and Captive Insurance," has recently been added to the library.

Mr. McElhiney points out that there are an estimated 7,000 to 8,000 captive insurance companies globally. About one-third of these captives are dormant, meaning they are being used on a limited basis, or they may be a result of a merger. These dormant captives are not being optimized and often are going along on auto pilot. Though financials are still being generated each year and ongoing transactions are still being handled for these captives, there is a way to unwind dormant captives through a commutation, a loss portfolio transfer, or an assumption agreement (novation). These runoff transactions can be employed to release and redeploy risk-bearing capital in support of new business strategies, while freeing up organizational resources, in return for an agreed-on premium. At the end of the day, these runoff transactions help captive owners achieve their objectives.

This section of the site currently features 76 short educational videos by 14 captive insurance experts. Among the topics covered in the 1–3-minute videos are runoff transactions, micro-captives, tax issues, captive feasibility, captive domicile selection, choosing an auditor, captive management, group captives, healthcare captives, risk pooling, common myths about captives, how to manage a captive efficiently, what makes a captive successful, and benefits in captives.

All of the captive insurance thought leaders have decades of broad experience with captive insurance companies, and they freely share their expertise in the videos. These videos constitute a wealth of information on captive insurance fundamentals that will be especially valuable to newcomers to captive insurance. By watching one or two of these informative videos each day for a month, you will hone your knowledge of captive insurance fundamentals and trends.

There is no cost to view the videos, and you will find them in the Captive Thought Leader Videos section of More videos will be added in the future.
