The Captive Insurance Companies Association (CICA) welcomes Courtney Claflin to its board. Mr. Claflin is the executive director of captive programs with the University of California's Office of the President. He has been voted by the CICA board of directors to fill an open seat recently vacated by Ken Arguello, senior director of risk management at Schwarz Partners, LP.

As executive director, Mr. Claflin focuses on the development, implementation, and management of the university's captives and all captive activities for Fiat Lux Risk and Insurance Company, a single parent captive, and UC Health RRG, a reciprocal risk retention group.

Previously, Mr. Claflin spent 30 years in the insurance brokerage community as a direct writing agent, independent broker, and ultimately a captive insurance practitioner. He is the principal architect of numerous single parent, group, health, micro and association captives. Mr. Claflin and the work of the captives he operates have been highly recognized.

Mr. Claflin was awarded the 2016 Captive Professional of the Year by Captive Review, and, in 2017, Risk and Insurance magazine recognized him as one of their National Risk All Stars. Also in 2017, Fiat Lux Risk and Insurance Company was awarded the Outstanding Captive Insurance Company of the Year by CICA. When he's not running captive insurance companies, Mr. Claflin serves as a faculty member for the International Center for Captive Insurance Education.

CICA President Dan Towle said, "We are excited to welcome Courtney to the board. He has a genuine passion for captives and experience with operating both a single parent captive and a risk retention group."

"Working in the captive insurance segment has been extremely rewarding. Being a member of the CICA board of directors allows me to further contribute to the captive space and bring my years of experience to the table in support of CICA's mission. I look forward to this exciting opportunity and working with Dan and my fellow board members," Mr. Claflin said.
