"CICR" Interviews Divers Alert Network

May 16, 2017

The June issue of Captive Insurance Company Reports (CICR) begins with an interview with William Ziefle of Divers Alert Network (DAN) about its use of alternative risk financing. Through a captive and a risk retention group, DAN covers amateur underwater divers for medical emergencies that happen while diving. DAN also compiles and disseminates research data on safe diving, such as descent rates, ascent rates, decompression sickness safety steps, and much more. DAN says that safety is its business, and the insurance programs provide the diver contact for further research.

There is much more to be gleaned from this issue of CICR.

  • "How Much Is Your Captive Saving You?" Joel Chansky and Mike Meehan of Milliman offer their thoughts on whether a captive makes sense from a cost savings point of view.

  • Marsh's Rocco F. Mancini provides a different view in "Commercial Captives: The Upside of Tax Reform." "Insuring unrelated risks to create a profit center has the potential to become the primary value-driving reason to own a captive in a post-tax reform United States."

  • Bruce Wright's colleagues from Eversheds Sutherland review a recent Supreme Court ruling in "Federal Courts’ Inherent Authority Revisited."

  • Rounding out the issue is a synopsis of the recent "SRS Webinar on Reputational Risk" and more about employee benefits from the Captive Insurance Companies Association Conference.

And, of course, CICR Editor Mike Mead provides his thoughts on captive happenings and this issue of CICR in "CICR News and Views."
