John O BrienWe at were saddened to learn from Ron Krebs of the passing of John J. O'Brien, JD, CLU, CPCU, last Friday. Mr. O’Brien was an attorney, a captive insurance specialist, and an expert witness. He is credited with being one of the founding fathers of the South Carolina captive insurance industry and was instrumental in the formation of both the Friendly Society and the South Carolina Captive Insurance Association.

He founded the Charleston Captive Management Company, the first captive management company to be formed in South Carolina. Eventually he sold the company to Wilmington Trust but remained an active leader in captives and the civic side of South Carolina. He served on the boards of Positive Physicians Insurance Exchange, Red Clay Risk Retention Group, Leader Care LTD, and First Keystone Risk Retention Group. He also served on the board and as a faculty member of International Center for Captive Insurance Education (ICCIE).

Mr. O'Brien's funeral service is scheduled for 11 a.m. April 29, 2016, at St. Michael's Church, in Charleston, South Carolina. A reception will follow.
