Captive Industry Loses a Long-Time Industry Leader

Richard Goff
March 05, 2015

Richard (Dick) Goff, managing director of The Taft Companies, a captive management firm and sponsor of Captive.com, died on February 28, 2015. Mr. Goff was well known in the captive community as one of its leaders.

"Dick was a guy who always made a positive difference," said John Jones, president of Montana Captive Insurance Association (MCIA). "His advice and counsel were invaluable in forming the association and growing Montana's captive industry over the past decade."

In addition to his directorship in MCIA, Mr. Goff was a founding director of other captive industry associations in Washington, DC, and South Carolina, as well as a current director of Delaware Captive Insurance Association and past chairman of the Self-Insurance Institute of America.

Mr. Goff was always interested in captive management best practices. Former Government Entities Mutual President and current Captive.com Co-Editor John Salisbury recalled spending time with Mr. Goff in DC demonstrating a newly installed imaging system that aspired to be the first virtual reinsurance captive.

Mary Claire Goff, wife, best friend, business partner, and senior vice president of The Taft Companies, said, "Dick so loved our industry and was blessed with the ability to share, mentor and support our industry with all his heart. He will be missed for sure."

His Montana involvement also included serving on the board of Rocky Mountain College in Billings and as a current director of Gallant Chance Ranch, a nonprofit residential education program for at-risk youth in Three Forks.

In celebration of Mr. Goff's life, his family invites memorial gifts to Gallant Chance Ranch, which may be mailed to Gallant Chance Ranch, 1097 W. Dry Creek Road, Belgrade, MT 59714.
