Artex—one of the world’s largest alternative risk providers—seeks an attorney with 10+ years of experience to lead our regulatory department, in our Mesa, Arizona office of 60 people.
The ideal candidate will be an attorney with over 10-20 years (or more) of experience in various areas of insurance and contract law, which may include: insurance coverage, insurance defense and litigation, insurance claims, policy drafting, regulatory compliance, and risk management. We will also consider an experienced corporate attorney with an emphasis in insurance matters and a broad range of other relevant experience.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Become a subject matter expert regarding the law and regulatory approach of 15 or more jurisdictions (worldwide) regarding captive insurance. (No prior knowledge of captive insurance is required.) A legal background in a wide range of insurance areas and coverage issues is very helpful in this regard (e.g., P&C lines, surplus lines, excess/umbrella). This expertise will allow you to assist the team in Mesa (about 60 people) and others within our North America division (200 people). Communicate effectively with fellow employees and clients regarding regulatory matters, and help guide clients to make decisions that impact their insurance company. Much of this position will involve giving verbal and written advice. Lead and manage the regulatory department (including direct reports). This department assists clients in regulatory applications and changes to their captive insurance company. Participate in the team that handles new company applications, formation paperwork, and licensing processes for new captives. General corporate legal matters, including preparation and review of various legal documents, such as management agreements. Maintain professional rapport and excellent communication with insurance regulators in 15 jurisdictions. This will include travel to conferences and domicile visits. Participate in industry groups and speak at captive insurance conferences. Work in a cooperative fashion in a positive team environment, alongside other professionals (CPAs, attorneys, insurance professionals). Other projects/duties as assigned.
Background: This position will be an excellent fit for an attorney with at least 10 years of insurance experience, who is looking to make a career change out of a law firm or other legal position, and seeks to work in industry, in a great environment. A lawyer with a background as insurance coverage counsel or trial attorney representing insurers would be one excellent background for this position. Artex has grown significantly over the past five years, and needs an attorney to liaison with regulators and clients, and also handle a variety of insurance and corporate legal matters. The successful candidate will have a friendly and outgoing personality and be adept at communicating and working with a wide variety of clients, co-workers and regulators, whose knowledge of insurance and captives varies widely. The candidate should enjoy being in a position where she or he is the “expert” and called upon to give advice, make quick decisions, and act as an advocate when required. This is not a position for someone who is shy or timid, or uncomfortable building relationships with people. While outstanding written and verbal skills are required, this position will emphasize verbal communication. Prior knowledge of captive insurance and alternative risk vehicles is a plus, but not required. Some travel is necessary to visit the various domiciles from time to time (US and the Caribbean) and attend conferences. Our office is located in Mesa, Arizona, convenient to the North 202 loop.
Benefits: excellent (health insurance, 401(k) plan, various other plans). Artex is a subsidiary of a NYSE / Fortune 500 company.
