General Company Information |
Smith, Bell
& Thompson Inc. has designed, marketed and administered specialty
insurance programs for associations and business groups for over
thirty years. We have formed relationships with thousands of insurance
brokers throughout the country who regularly access these programs.
When the Vermont Legislature passed the Special Insurer Act in 1981,
it was a natural extension of our operation to enter the captive
insurance field.
In 1982, an affiliate, SB&T Captive Management Company, was
formed to capitalize on this opportunity. Our President, Roger
Teese, was the first Chairman of the Vermont Captive Insurance
Association. He was instrumental in the captive industry’s
development and its current stature in Vermont, and throughout
the world. Over the years, we have built strong professional ties
to the captive industry regulators and relationships with many
other providers which may service your captive in legal, audit
and actuarial capacities. These long-standing affiliations help
ensure that your experience in forming and operating a captive
will be a smooth and pleasant one.
SB&T Captive Management Company added to its global resources
and expertise in 2004, when Smith, Bell & Thompson became
the specialty program and captive management division of Hilb,
Rogal & Hobbs (HRH). SB&T Captive Management Company retains
it structural independence and has amassed a client base with
over $1 billion in assets and $400 million in premiums, with clients
ranging from manufacturers to professional organizations to non-profits.

Other Information |
Due
to our proficiency in forming pure parent, industrial-insured, association,
sponsored and risk retention group captives, many diverse clients
have sought our assistance in establishing and licensing their own
captive insurance companies. SB&T will assist you through the
process, from choosing a domicile, to coordinating the feasibility
study and preparing the application, to commencing business after
the captive license is issued. You may choose to utilize our many
relationships with fronting carriers and reinsurance arrangements
in the United States (and worldwide) for use by your captive. In
your capacity as a captive owner, we can assist you with regulatory
items by preparing and filing all applicable forms with the various
state regulators. We can also be instrumental in helping you select
service providers, and can generally serve as your liaison with
regard to regulatory items and service provider issues. |
