OLDWICK, N.J., June 2, 2009—The A.M. Best Co.,. has introduced an interactive world catastrophe map of 2008’s top insured loss events at www.bestreview.com.

The year was marked by extreme weather events that predominantly plagued North America and Asia. The number one event of 2008 was Hurricane Ike, which likely will cost insurers well more than $10 billion. In all, insurance companies paid over $50 billion in losses. Click on the World Catastrophes Map button at the Best’s Review Web site to find out more.

The world map contains the top 20 events costliest to insurers. Each event is accompanied by a video that further describes the event, using video footage and photographs. In addition, links to closer regional maps are available, where events that did not make the top 20 can be found.
Further links to a detailed timeline of 2008 also appear on the map. This timeline also includes disasters from all over the world and other tragic events, such as terrorist attacks.

Finally, a look at risky hot spots are pinpointed, showing places in the world where events such as earthquakes, pirate attacks, wildfires and much more have historically or recently occurred.

A pullout version of the map also can be found in the June 2009 issue of Best’s Review.
