January 18, 2011: "Integrating US Risks For Canadian Parent Corporations" by Steven Beeghly.This paper offers an American perspective highlighting use of a captive insurance company for Canadian businesses, groups, pools, entities, associations, and producers with potential loss and liability exposure from operations and exports to the US.  Discussion of a variety of purposes of using a captive insurance company to treat these exposures and an overview for Canadians as to the process of determining whether a captive would make economic sense.

  7. Updated Version, May 15, 2010: Freedom in Captivity. This well-written white paper was written by Jan Dash and Herman Liburd from the law firm of Liburd and Dash. A portion of the paper is specific to the captive domicile, Nevis, but the vast majority of it comprises a cohesive "Captives 101" summary, which is always in high demand at captive.com.
  8. October 9 2009: Introduction to Risk Finance for Captives. In this 19-page paper, the author, James Mounty, of Miller Insurance Services Ltd, London, supplies an in-depth introduction to insurance and risk financing. Graphs and illustrations make complex ideas clear and understandable for the novice. The paper not only gives helpful information on the basics of insurance and risk finance, but then goes on to apply these concepts with case studies and applications, including the use of captives to finance risk. This is truly an outstanding paper.

  14. July 27, 2007: The 2006 Captive Act Amendments: Revolutionizing Protected Cell Laws in the District by Stephen F. Donahoe, Muldoon Murphy & Aguggia LLP. On March 14, 2007, the District of Columbia amended its captive insurance laws by enacting the Captive Insurance Company Amendment Act of 2006 (the “2006 Amendments”). The 2006 Amendments update segregated cell provisions included in the District’s Captive Insurance Company Acts of 2000 and 2004 and offer clear advantages over other domestic domiciles with respect to protected cell flexibility. Andrew expertly analyzes the competitive challenges facing group captives, their inherent competitive advantages and strategies to compete. The briefing is focused on group captives including risk retention groups. The discussion also applies to other group risk financing mechanisms such as governmental pools and self-insured workers compensation groups.

In this article, Peter fleshes out the advantages of New Zealand's regulations regime on captive insurance.
  17. Ohio Agent Credited With 'Captives', by Christopher Kramer, MBA, posted on June 1, 2007, previously appearing in The National Underwriter Magazine. [Follow this link to the NU website]. The article describes how Fred Reiss, an Agent based in Ohio, transformed the insurance industry by establishing a captive for his largest client back in 1955. Mr. Reiss will be inducted into the Insurance Hall of Fame in Berlin, Germany, later this year. This fine article adds to the affirmation that captive insurance strategies have changed the way risks are insured - globally.
